A Dark Day for Democracy

For me and, I suspect for many others, the results of the recent US elections are still sinking in.

Henry Giroux is an American author who has written extensively on the crisis of democracy and neoliberal fascism in the 21st century. His recent article on the fallout from Trump’s second coming and the recent US election generally is sobering. He argues that Trump is the grim culmination of this cultural war against reason, truth, and critical thinking. I agree. To that, I would add the rule of law and the entire concept of civil society.

Importantly, he contends that while the slide into fascism in the US is growing ever more likely it is not inevitable. https://www.counterpunch.org/2024/11/08/americas-descent-into-fascism-can-be-stopped/

Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe agrees pointing out that unlike the sudden slide into authoritarianism seen in other countries, the US has the advantage of having a decentralized government that can serve as a strong counterweight to Trump’s authoritarian ambitions.

I hope they are all right.
